Listening back on the stream as my cd copy is in a box. This was my second Incident, had been a fan for a couple years, had several tapes and some cds of shows, but still had no idea what to expect. The first set is pretty good, super solid Pirates opener (my next one took 50 shows across almost six years); super rare Is That What You Want> Indian Creek was funk into bluegrass. Still blows my mind that a band can open with a Latin instrumental, do a funky original that they played like 15 times total into another instrumental, this one bluegrass. Then tell a joke about banana pudding that wasn't a joke and sing another bluegrass tune. Then another rare Latin instrumental (so rare it took 65 show across almost 16 years to get another). Then a standby Kyle tune Got What He Wanted, rocky patches in it, but a nice Norwegian Wood Jam out of it before a nice Smile set closer. It was a good first set, and Billy even made mention of the fact that the second half was "the set we really kick it through the uprights." They delivered.
Another instrumental, the legendary search for the ever elusive Blackberry Blossom (or blackfurry possum), one of Cheese's earliest workhorses along with Lonesome Fiddle Blues, and where they found they could really push musical boundaries. This one is a great example, going on a deep interstellar journey, with a flawless return to the bluegrass ending. Then a little crowd-pleasing with Steve Miller's classic The Joker with Billy doing his famous running, captured most awesomely in the photo by Grefter. But this Joker wasn't done there, no, they dropped into a Flashlight Jam, here called Bigger Isn't Better Jam because they often did a Flashlight Jam after raging Bigger Isn't Betters, anyway this is jam based on Flashlight by Parliament Funkadelic rages funkily along into a tight Born on the Wrong Planet. The preceding Flashlight Jam being all the funk jam needed for Planet. The their bluegrassy take on the Beatles I've Just Seen a Face, always fun to catch one of these. Then another funk instrumental, jazz funk classic The Chicken, now long since shelved except for occasional jams on it in Miss Brown's, but into Shine-> Shantytown? Damn! That was the clear highlight of the night spent in the sweatbox that is The Ritz. Concrete floors with sheet metal roofing equals bad sound, but all of that completely worth it for Shine-> Shantytown! Helluva way to end a show. But then they come back for a huge Jellyfish-> Daryl encore. All captured on a great DSBD pull. A great night, fun to look back on it two full decades and a lifetime ago.
